Five years after the invasion Iraq Body Count (IBC) not only continues to keep a firm day-by-day count, it also maintains the largest public list of named and identified Iraqi dead.

IBC’s work remains a key and unique resource for institutions, researchers, media, and individual citizens.

But IBC is still run by volunteers on a shoestring. Billions are being spent on this war, but almost nothing on recording its Iraqi victims.

Iraq Body Count (IBC) is an analytical project, not a news portal. Our procedure is to collect and reconcile every available, distinct report about each incident. For larger events, stories may run into the dozens and continue to emerge for days or weeks. This, and the inexorable rise in daily violent incidents, means that there is a considerable gap between the initial reporting of events and their first appearance in the IBC database.

However, we obtain an early impression of events within about 48 hours of first reports. This page provides our news gatherer's account of such recent events, but please keep in mind that these are not our final database entries. Rather, they should be considered an early update on civilian casualties.

Monday 14 April: 69 dead

Baghdad: roadside bomb kills 6, Bab al-Sharji; mortars kill 1, Zayuna; bomb blows up minibus, kills 2, Karrada; Roadside bomb kills 2 policemen, Yusufiya; 5 bodies.

Basra: gunmen kill intelligence officer.

Wajihiyah: gunmen kill 1.

Saturday 12 April: 34 dead

Baghdad: roadside bomb kills 2 policemen, Ur; 7 die in clashes/US air strikes, Sadr City; 3 bodies; 12 more bodies found in mass grave, Mahmudiya.

Balad Ruz: gunmen kill man in front of his family.
Baquba: 2 Sahwa and 1 policeman killed in separate incidents.

Ninewa
Mosul: truck bomb kills 2, one of them a child; 3 bodies.

Haswa: gunmen kill policeman.

Friday 11 April: 28 dead

Baghdad: rocket hits hotel, kills 3; roadside bomb kills policeman, Shaab; roadside bomb kills 3, Baladiyat; mortars hit bakery, kill 2, Talbiya; 3 bodies.

Ramadi: suicide car bomber kills 4 Sahwa at checkpoint.

Hawija: gunmen kill 2 boys.

PUK member is found dead after being abducted the previous evening.

Baghdad: up to 21 civilians (inc. 4 children) reported killed in mortar attacks and clashes, Sadr City; 4 members of security forces die during operations; 2 bodies.

Kirkuk: 2 bodies.
Tal al-Hadeed: civilian killed in drive-by shooting.

Tuesday 8 April: 31 dead
