His crime, the professor said, was that he had converted years before from Shia to Sunni Islam and had dared to hire religious Sunni professors in the history department that he chaired. ...

His family denounced rumors that Zergany was killed because of alleged connections to Hussein's regime. They said he was killed "because he has a high degree in the sciences, and they want to kill the scientists. Today him, tomorrow another who has the same certificate." Zergany left a wife and four children ages 10 to 16.
