Christopher Klein-Beekman (Canada), 32, worked for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) as the Programme Coordinator for Iraq. He took up this post in May 2002, working on a large operation that helped protect millions of Iraqi children. Mr. Klein-Beekman was previously a UNICEF Programme Officer in Kosovo and Ethiopia.

In accepting the Sakharov Prize, Kofi Annan described those who died in the 19 August attack as "free spirits and free thinkers" and praised their courage in making the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of peace.
