Iraq Body Count (IBC) is an analytical project, not a news portal. Our procedure is to collect and reconcile every available, distinct report about each incident. For larger events, stories may run into the dozens and continue to emerge for days or weeks. This, and the inexorable rise in daily violent incidents, means that there is a considerable gap between the initial reporting of events and their first appearance in the IBC database.

However, we obtain an early impression of events within about 48 hours of first reports. This page provides our news gatherer's account of such recent events, but please keep in mind that these are not our final database entries. Rather, they should be considered an early update on civilian casualties.

Sunday 17 September: 7 killed

Muharibeen village west of Mosul: 3 killed, 23 injured, including women and children in booby-trap bomb explosion at a school being used to train pro-government volunteer tribal fighters (of whom up to 12 were also killed)

Seidy Abdullah neighbourhood southern Baghdad: 1 killed, 4 injured in IED explosion targeting shops

Dar Revolution, west of Mosul: 2, the headless bodies of a husband and wife found

Alexandria, north of Babylon: 1 body found of a woman in her fifties with wounds


Saturday 16 September: 23 killed

al-Adan neighbourhood, Kirkuk: 3 killed, 10 injured by late-night car bomb outside alcohol seller's shop

Akashat, western Anbar: 6 members of popular mobilisation force by IED

Tal-Afar or Qaim: 2 deserters executed by ISIS

Muqdadiyah, northeast of Diyala: 2, a civilian and a police officer killed, 7 others injured by suicide bomber attack near shopping mall

al-Jihad neighbourhood, western Baghdad: 1 government employee by IED placed in his car

Ameriyah, north of Baquba: 1 body found of an unidentified young man, showing signs of hanging, dumped in farmland

North of Baquba: 2 bodies found of men with gunshot wounds to the head and chest

Ramadi: 1 killed, another injured, by roadside bomb

Hawija outskirts: 5 family members of an ISIS militant, including 2 children, killed by roadside bomb while fleeing the city on foot [update]

Friday 15 September: 7 killed

Hor Rajab area, south of Baghdad: 1 killed, 3 wounded by roadside bombe planted near marketplace

Kara Tepe, northeast of Baquba: 1 farmer killed by IED placed on an agricultural road

al-Qaim: 3 young men, accused of collaboration with security forces, executed by ISIS

Radwaniyah, west of Baghdad: 2 members of a tribal group killed in gunfire on their vehicle

Thursday 14 September: 93 killed

Near Nasiriyah: 84 killed, "most of them Iranians" and another 93 wounded, with 19 victims said to be children, in suicide bomber, grenade and gunfire attacks on diners at a restaurant and pilgrims at a checkpoint, claimed by ISIS

al-Sukkar neighbourhood, Mosul: 2 brothers shot by unidentified gunmen near their home

North Babylon: 2 bodies found

Northeast of Baquba: 1 by Peshmerga "warning fire" attempting to force him to stop his car

East Baghdad: 1 body found, shot in head and chest, with signs of torture

Anu, west of Ramadi: 3 member family killed, "including a girl and a woman", 10 others wounded, in aerial bombardment by unidentified warplane

Wednesday 13 September: 12 killed

Nahrawan, west of Baghdad: 1 killed, 6 wounded by IED planted near brick kilns

Besmaya village, southeast of Baghdad: 1 killed, 8 wounded by IED

Musayyib, north of Hilla: 1 policeman killed 10 others including civilians wounded by suicide attack on a checkpoint

Kut: 1 body of a man found, shot, whose kidnappers had lured him into an industrial area on the pretext of buying his car

Industrial area near Abu Ghraib: 1 killed, 7 wounded by roadside bomb

Rashidiya, north of Baghdad: 1 killed by unknown gunmen opening fire near his home

Badrah, east of Kut: 1 killed, 3 wounded in outbreak of tribal conflict

Qaim, west Anbar: 7 killed by ISIS "over accusations of collaborating with security forces"

Mosul: 1 electrical power grid engineer (Fattah Khalaf Saleh) by roadside bomb
