Iraq Body Count (IBC) is an analytical project, not a news portal. Our procedure is to collect and reconcile every available, distinct report about each incident. For larger events, stories may run into the dozens and continue to emerge for days or weeks. This, and the inexorable rise in daily violent incidents, means that there is a considerable gap between the initial reporting of events and their first appearance in the IBC database.

However, we obtain an early impression of events within about 48 hours of first reports. This page provides our news gatherer's account of such recent events, but please keep in mind that these are not our final database entries. Rather, they should be considered an early update on civilian casualties.

Mosul: 2 men, a tribal leader and his nephew, were killed in IS attack.

Baghdad: 2 killed by gunfire in Jamila.

Dhi Qar: 1 body found in the north of the province.

Iftikhar: 8 family members in two cars killed by gunmen; the dead were 2 men, 2 women and 4 children.

Zend Mulla: 9 killed by mortar shells.

Shankal: 2 bodies of Yazidis, who had been kidnapped, found.

Diwaniya: 1 hospital employee killed by gunmen.

Saturday 20 July: 1 killed

Baghdad: 1 police director of Diwaniya killed by gunmen.

Friday 19 July: 7 killed

Basra: 5 killed in three separate incidents.

Baghdad: 1 body found in Sadr City.

Al-Islah: 1 farmer killed by IED.

Thursday 18 July: 1 killed

Basra: 1 body found in Al-Sai.

Wednesday 17 July: 11 killed

Erbil: 3 men -a Turkish diplomat and two Iraqis- killed by gunmen near the Turkish Consulate.

Mosul: 8 bodies pulled from rubble.

Ahmed Aldanok Rashad (south of Kirkuk): 2 killed in armed attack.
