Iraq Body Count (IBC) is an analytical project, not a news portal. Our procedure is to collect and reconcile every available, distinct report about each incident. For larger events, stories may run into the dozens and continue to emerge for days or weeks. This, and the inexorable rise in daily violent incidents, means that there is a considerable gap between the initial reporting of events and their first appearance in the IBC database.

However, we obtain an early impression of events within about 48 hours of first reports. This page provides our news gatherer's account of such recent events, but please keep in mind that these are not our final database entries. Rather, they should be considered an early update on civilian casualties.

Friday 12 January: 13 killed

Baghdad: 1 killed by unknown gunman in Shula;
1 by IED at a fruit and vegetable market in Al-Wahda;
1 shop owner by unknown gunmen in Abu Ghraib;
2 by unknown gunmen in Duanem.

Abbasi: 3 family members (mother and two sons) by an unknown gunman.

Mosul: 2 bodies found.

Basra: 1 employee in the narcotics department found dead days after abduction.

Madain: 1 killed by IED at a fish market.

Sulaimaniya: 1 died when gunmen opened fire at a mosque after prayers.

Thursday 11 January: 13 killed

Mosul: 5 bodies found under rubble; 1 mukhtar shot outside his house.

Sulaimaniya: 3 children killed by IED in Chamchamal; 1 by landmine.

Monday 8 January: 14 killed

Kirkuk: 2 killed in a car by hand grenade.

Amara: 1 body belonging to a young man found.

Sunday 7 January: 6 killed

Baghdad: 1 body found with gunshot wounds in Dora; 1 cafe owner stabbed in Amil; 1 killed in IED explosion in Jisr Diyala.

Basra: 1 child killed by gunfire.

Qaim: 1 policeman blown up by landmine.

Mosul: 1 mayor of Rashidiya assassinated by unknown gunmen.

Saturday 6 January: 8 killed

Nada Basin: 3 killed by car bomb targeting the head of the Nada clan and his family.

Baghdad: 4 killed by gunfire and IEDs in Kamaliya, Abu Ghraib, Dora and Abu Dshir.

Samawah: 1 man killed by armed militia.
