Iraq Body Count (IBC) is an analytical project, not a news portal. Our procedure is to collect and reconcile every available, distinct report about each incident. For larger events, stories may run into the dozens and continue to emerge for days or weeks. This, and the inexorable rise in daily violent incidents, means that there is a considerable gap between the initial reporting of events and their first appearance in the IBC database.

However, we obtain an early impression of events within about 48 hours of first reports. This page provides our news gatherer's account of such recent events, but please keep in mind that these are not our final database entries. Rather, they should be considered an early update on civilian casualties.

Monday 1 October: 5 killed

Baghdad: 2 killed by IEDs in Shaab and Obaidi.

Tawilah: 2 killed by IED.

Mosul: 1 killed by gunmen.

Sunday 30 September: 2 killed

Baghdad: 1 killed by IED in Obaidi; 1 body found in Saba al-Bour.

SEPTEMBER TOTAL: 241 CIVILIANS KILLED.

Saturday 29 September: 3 killed

Hamam al-Alil: 2 fishermen killed by gunmen.

Basra: 1 medical assistant killed by gunmen.

Friday 28 September: 5 killed

Babil: 1 killed by gunmen.

Hilla: 1 mukhtar killed by gunmen.

Nasiriyah: 1 engineer in the Ministry of Oil killed by gunmen.

Najaf: 1 body (of 13-year-old child) found. The child had been abducted.

Basra: 1 killed by gunmen.

Thursday 27 September: 3 killed

Baghdad: 1 killed by gunmen in Camp Sarah; 1 body found in Abu Ghraib.

Hawija: 1 policeman killed by IED.


Wednesday 26 September: 1 killed

Baghdad: 1 killed by gunmen in Bob al-Sham.
